It makes me sad to hear about people being run off of micro.blog due to the behavior of community members, and I have a few thoughts. First, surely we can be better than this, we’re all adults. Admittedly, that’s wishful thinking on my part I know, but it still is something I think of. Second, I think that the micro.blog community as a whole, (or at least as much of it as possible), should spend some time thinking about not only what isn’t acceptable behavior, but also what counts as acceptable and expected behavior. Fortunately I think we’re small enough that this can actually be accomplished, along with adding the technical tools for community members as well as the community manager to deal with objectionable content. Finally, I hope we as a community don’t make the mistake of turning to digital solutionism in order to solve the problem of people being harmful to the community as a whole or members in particular, because at the end of the day these are social problems, not technical ones.
